Below you will find a useful guide to the ratings applied to each property and their summarised meanings.

Enjoy England Quality Rose
The following descriptions of what to expect apply to all types of accommodation. Use them as a general guide to what you can expect.
Generic Standard:
- 1 Star - Simple, practical, no frills.
- 2 Star - Well presented and well run.
- 3 Star - Good level of quality and comfort.
- 4 Star - Excellent standard throughout.
- 5 Star - Exceptional with a degree of luxury.
Breakdown:
- 1 Star - Simple, practical, no frills.
- 2 Star - Well presented and well run.
- 3 Star - All rooms will have a washbasin.
- 4 Star - A minimum of 50% of the rooms will be ensuite or have a private bathroom.
- 5 Star - The highest standards of quality and service with a feeling of luxury. All rooms will be ensuite or have a private bathroom.
Self Catering:
- 1 Star - A microwave is provided.
- 2 Star - All beds full size.
- 3 Star - Bed linen available.
- 4 Star - Linen provided and towels available. Access to a freezer and washing machine.
- 5 Star - The highest standards of quality and attention to detail.
Visit Wales
Visit Wales operates a policy whereby it only lists accommodation which has been fully inspected and graded for quality. The inspections or quality assessments are undertaken on an annual basis, so you can book with confidence, knowing that featured accommodation has been checked out by Visit Wales' own quality assessors.
As a guide:
- 1 Star - fair to good quality
- 2 Star - good quality
- 3 Star - very good quality
- 4 Star - excellent quality
- 5 Star - exceptional quality
Self Catering Accommodation (Holiday Cottages) and B&B’s
- 1 Star: Fair to good quality overall, with furniture, furnishings and fittings all in sound condition and offering a good standard of cleanliness.
- 2 Star: A good overall quality in most aspects of the property. A good standard of cleanliness and maintenance.
- 3 Star: A very good quality overall, with very good standards of cleanliness. Ample space and good quality furniture and fittings.
- 4 Star: An excellent overall level of quality with greater attention to detail. High standards of cleanliness. Layout of property more likely to be designed with guest comfort in mind.
- 5 Star: An exceptional overall level of quality, with the highest standards throughout including cleanliness, maintenance, range of equipment and guest care. Outstanding attention to detail with many personal touches.
The AA
Star ratings, from one to five, are used to assess the standard of the quality you can expect for hotels and bed & breakfast accommodation. The following is a brief summary of standards expected from the establishment types within their ratings.
B&B’s
- 1 Star: A clean establishment, offering a minimal service with a full cooked or substantial continental breakfast available.
- 2 Star: A courteous and helpful service. Breakfast is prepared with a good level of care and bedrooms are comfortable.
- 3 Star: A positive and friendly service. Breakfast will be prepared using good quality ingredients. Rooms will be well-appointed and comfortable.
- 4 Star: An attentive and welcoming service. Breakfast is prepared using fresh ingredients with a high degree of care. Rooms have comfortable beds and furnishings of high quality.
- 5 Star: Guests are made to feel at home and extra services are offered. Breakfast is of an excellent quality, prepared using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients. Rooms have comfortable beds and furnishings of excellent quality.
